The Money Supply in Macroeconomics
نویسنده
چکیده
The notion that the quantity of money in an economy might be endogenously determined has a long history. Even so, it has never been part of mainstream economic thinking which has remained dominated by the view that the policymaker somehow controls the stock of money and that interest rates are market-determined. However, the need to design and operate a monetary policy that works for modern economies as they are currently constructed, has led to the emergence of the so-called ‘new consensus macroeconomics’ in which it is recognised that the policymaker sets a short-term interest rate and the quantities of money and credit are demand-determined. This paper looks at the way in which this ‘new consensus’ is (at last) forcing a recognition, in the teaching of money, that the money supply is endogenously determined. It also shows how we can take this further by adding a banking sector to a model of the real economy in which the money supply is endogenously determined. The paper ends by showing how some of the issues currently emerging in the new consensus are very closely related to earlier debates amongst post Keynesian economists. *Professor of Monetary Economics, Centre for Global Finance, Bristol Business School, UWE Bristol. Inflation and Cost Push in Iran's Economy
There have been two broad theories of inflation, namely the demand-pull theory of inflation (that is nowadays mainly the monetary theory of inflation) and the cost-push theory of inflation. The mainstream macroeconomics views inflation as a monetary phenomenon in the long run. Iran has experienced double-digit rates of inflation for about four decades. Our main aim is an explanation for the lon...
متن کاملThe Multiplier Approach to the Money Supply Process: A Precautionary Note
HE MULTIPLIER MODEL of the money supply, originally developed by Brunner (1961) and Brunner and Meltzer (1964), has become the standard paradigm in macroeconomics and money and banking textbooks to explain how the policy actions of the Federal Reserve influence the money stock. It also has been used in empirical analyses of money stock control and the impact of monetary policy actions on other ...
متن کاملTowards Post - Keynesian Ecological Macroeconomics
The paper starts with a brief criticism of macroeconomic analyses of different schools of thought for their focus on economic growth and maximisation of output. This applies to the traditional Keynesian approach, which has focused on the achievement of sufficient aggregate demand to underpin full employment and full capacity utilisation, down-playing aggregate supply constraints. This also appl...
متن کاملNotes on Money and Business Cycles
These notes are concerned with one answer to a fundamental question in macroeconomics: What causes the recurrent ups and downs we call the business cycle? For years, based largely on the work of Friedman-Schwartz (A Monetary History of the United States), the emphasis in macroeconomics was on monetary theories of economic fluctuations. The Great Depression in the United States was explained by ...
متن کاملThe Endogenous or Exogenous Nature of Money Supply: Case of Iran
This paper investigates the endogenous money supply hypothesis in Iran. To this end, we attempt to find causality directions between bank credits and money aggregates. Utilizing Diks and Panchenko’s (2006) nonparametric Granger causality test for the time series data over the period 2006:04-2018:12 confirms the existence of a significant causality running from bank credits to money aggregates. ...
